Transports

The SURF Engine supports media streams as input or output, carried by transport layers. The SURF Engine supports the following transports:

  • RTP/RTCP
  • MPEG2-Transport Stream (TS)
  • 3G-324M
  • SRTP
  • IuUP/NbUP
  • iTDM

RTP/RTCP

Typically used for video streaming to mobile phones, VoIP applications, as well as some Web applications.

  • RFC support
    • RFC4629 – support for H.263
    • RFC3984 – support for H.264
    • RFC3016 – support for MPEG4
    • RFC3550/3551 – definition of RTP and RTCP
    • RFC3640 – support for MPEG4
    • RFC4585 – support for client-server feedback on top of RTCP (AVPF).
    • RFC3389 – comfort noise generation
    • RFC4867 – support for NB-AMR
    • RFC3952 – support for iLBC
    • RFC3558 – support for EVRC and WB-AMR
    • RFC2833/4733 – telephony events relay
    • RFC4040 – encapsulation of TDM of RTP/UDP/IP
  • IP layer
    • Voice – IPv4, IPv6
    • Video – IPv4
  • RTP/RTCP dynamic bit-rate adaptation

MPEG2 Transport Stream (TS)

Typically used in TV services.

  • Supported codecs
    • H.264 baseline profile
    • H.264 main profile
    • AAC-LC
  • Support for multiple MPEG2 TS input streams per DSP
  • Up to 4 video streams and 12 audio streams per transport stream
  • Compatibility with .TS files, used by HTTP Live for iPhone

3G-324M

Typically used in IMS and IVVR applications.

  • Supported codecs:
    • Video: H.263, MPEG4
    • Voice: NB-AMR
  • Mux level: up to level 2
  • High density and low delay:
    • H.223 runs on DSP
    • H.223 and video transcoding can run on the same DSP, eliminating delay between transcoding function and 3G-324M transport function
    • H.245 runs on host (signaling stack)
  • Customers have the option to use their own H.245 signaling stack and interface with the H.223 layer in the DSP

SRTP

Typically used for encryption of voice over IP (VoIP) traffic.

  • Supports AES encryption
  • 128, 192, and 256 bit encryption keys
  • Optional 112 bit salt key
  • SHA1 authentication
  • Re-keying: Variable lifetime for each key may be set
  • An extension to the wireline and wireless narrowband codecs

IuUP/NB-UP transport

Used mobile communication to transfer circuit-switched voice (mainly AMR) and circuit-switched video (3G-324M) over an IP transport.

  • IU-UP – 3GPP TS 25.415
  • NB-UP – 3GPP TS 29.415
  • Transfer of AMR/AMR2 voice over IuUP/NB-UP RTP/UDP/IP transport

iTDM transport

Typically used in to transfer TDM in ATCA architecture.

  • iTDM support in both 125uS and 1ms options
  • Add-on module to the SURF AMC board
  • Up to 880 bi-directional TDM channels per AMC
  • Interoperable with iTDM line cards of Interphase and NAT
