Windows Media® Video 9 (WMV 9)
WMV 9 refers to a video codec developed by Microsoft which conforms to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) VC-1 standard to provide high-quality video for streaming and downloading.
SurfWare-Media 5.0 multimedia processing package is an established convergence technology, featuring decoders for WMV 9. It also allows for the transcoding and distribution of resulting files in a variety of other video formats.
WMV 9 supports a wide range of bit rates, from high-definition content at about one-third the bit rate of the MPEG-2. This video codec also supports professional-quality downloadable videos with two-pass and variable bit rate (VBR) encoding.

Windows Media® Video 9 Advanced Profile
The WMV 9 Series includes an advanced profile which supports interlaced video content. In the past, interlaced video content was always de-interlaced before encoding with the Windows Media Video codec. Now, encoding applications such as Windows Media 9 are able to support the compression of interlaced content without having to first convert it to progressive content. The advantage of this advancement is that the interlaced content may be viewed directly on an interlaced device, such as a television.
Furthermore, the advanced portfolio allows for transport independence, enabling the delivery of WMV 9's Advanced Profile over systems that are not Windows Media-based. Systems such as standards-based broadcast infrastructures (via MPEG-2 transport streams), wireless infrastructures (using real-time transfer protocol [RTP]), or even DVDs.
